Research In Motion's new BlackBerry Curve 8530 aims at consumers instead of business users, with an advanced media player for music and video, and multimedia capabilities, in addition to standard-issue features such as access to BlackBerry App World. The BlackBerry Curve 8530 is RIM's attempt at a more media-centric smartphone, with mechanical controls for music integrated into the form-factor. The BlackBerry Curve 8530 also comes with built-in WiFi (802.11 b/g) and GPS with support for location-based applications.  

I had a chance to test out Sony Ericsson's new Xperia X10 (codenamed "Rachael") for a few minutes at last night's Pepcom in NYC. The Xperia X10 is a slim, sleek slab with an expansive 4-inch capacitive touch screen with 854-by-480-pixel resolution. Unlike its predecessor, the Xperia X1 , the X10 drops the keyboard and also switches from Windows Mobile to Android.

More than 500 budding film-makers from across the Middle East have entered two-minute movie clips of everyday life in contest being run as part of the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) 2009. The pan-Arab competition, MBC's 'Movies in Motion', has drawn 550 entries from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt and Morocco. DIFF Marketing and Sponsorship Director Mahsa Motamedi said the event had provided a platform that encouraged young movie enthusiasts in the region to take the next step forward.  

Sony Ericsson says its new cellphones will features an "Infinite Button" that can connect you to your friends, photos, music, videos and more. Well, it will do this if it can actually deliver the phones with the buttons next year. The joint venture between two venerable electronics giants is one of the many cellphone companies to entirely miss the rapid transition of the market to smartphones.

China Mobile ( CHL - Analyst Report ), the world's largest wireless carrier by subscriber, has revealed its plan to commence the trial run of its 4G network during World Expo 2010 to be held in Shanghai from May 1 to Oct 31, 2010. The company's 4G service is based on the TD-LTE (Time Division Duplex Long Term Evolution) mobile broadband technology. Roughly 200 participants and 70 million visitors are expected to assemble at the Expo. China Mobile has recently selected Alcatel-Lucent ( ALU - Analyst ...  

Nortel Network Corp .'s ( NT ) said that the final auction for acquiring all of its Metro optical and Ethernet Networks (MEN) division is on Nov 20, 2009. The deal is subject to a competitive bidding process. Nokia Siemens Networks, a joint venture between Nokia ( NOK - Snapshot Report ) and Siemens AG (SI - Analyst Report ) and a private equity firm One Equity Partners have jointly bid for Nortel's optical networking and carrier Ethernet business challenging Ciena Corporation 's (CIEN) bid for the assets.  

Japanese-Swedish mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson might bring the Nexus UX platform, which is better known as the Rachael user interface present on its Android-based XPERIA X10 handset, to more devices, even if not powered by Google's operating system. The high-end device, as many of you might already know, is expected to arrive on the market sometime in February next year. Swedish telecom equipment manufacturer Ericsson announced an enhanced EDGE Evolution solution promising to power the current GSM networks with 3G capabilities. Ericsson claims that the new solution can shoot up data speeds by up to 300%. The new solution makes available mobile broadband at near-3G speeds to 4 billion of the world s population.
